NFO – Facebook´s Edge Rank Revealed

What does NFO or “News Feed Optimization” means? Before I´m going deeper into News Feed Optimization, we need to take a look at the way the average Facebook user is using Facebook these days.

Did you know that there are two types of News Feed views you can choose on your Facebook homepage, the “Top News” and “Most recent” (You can change between both in the right corner of your facebook homepage, to use the links, you need to be logged in at Facebook).

The average Facebook user simply don´t know about this feature, so they are just using the default setting, which means the “Top News” section! (Hey, thats about 90% if all Facebook users)

What does this mean for you?

That´s simple : If you don´t get your message in the “Top News” section of your Facebook friends and Fans, there will most likely nobody seeing it! On the other hand, if you get in the Top News section, you can normally expect a lot of exposure!

Facebook is using a complex algorithm to determine the weight and importnance of each single optject on Facebook! Well, let us first see what a Facebook Object is :

What Is An Facebook Object?
An Object is any one thing on Facebook, this can be a profile, a picture, video, FanPage, a comment and so on…..In Fact, anything on Facebook is an Object!

What Is an Facebook Edge?
An edge is any action taken on an Object, this can be a comment, a like or any other action done on a object!

Keep in mind that an edge can also be an edge on another edge, a like on a comment for example!

Which Factors  Is Facebook Using To Determine Your Edge Rank for each object?

In fact are there 4 important factors used by Facebook :

Timing : This is pretty easy to understand. More recent or “newer” news are more valued by Facebook than older news or actions.

Affinity : Social Value (Amount of likes, comments,sends and so on) How is the object treated by the community, more comments and likes for example are increasing your chance to get into the Top News section!

Weight : The overall weight of the type of object! So is a video much more important in the eyes of Facebook than a picture or even an audiofile.

Relevancy : The level of relationship between you and your friends / fans / customers.  As example : If a user comments on your Fanpage / Post, there will be a much higher chance that your future post will end up in their Top News section! If you comment back, the chance is again higher.

All these four factors are used by Facebook to determine the Edge Rank of every object on Facebook.

And this edge rank is used by Facebook to determine if an object ends up in the “Top News” or “Recent News” section!

And this makes the  decision if your message is seen by 10% or 90 (100%) % of your connected friends, Fans and contacts…

So you see how important it is to know about this algorithm, if you are using Facebook for your online marketing or traffic generation!
